My Personal Review about the TV Series “Adolescence”

The story behind this trending TV Series titled Adolescence is about a 13-year-old schoolboy Jamie Miller who is arrested after murdering a girl in his school. The movie began in an English town in Britian UK, armed police raid a family home and arrest Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy, on suspicion of the murder of a classmate, Katie Leonard. Jamie is processed and held at a police station for questioning and then remanded in custody at a secure training centre. It continued with investigations at Jamie school. After being interviewed by a forensic psychologist it was revealed that Jamie has been chronically bullied via social media.

Other students, including Katie, had targeted him on Instagram, calling Jamie ugly and labelling him an incel. Jamie internalized these labels and lashes out at his psychologist. At home, Jamie family deals with the community backlash against them as they work together to cope with Jamie arrest and subsequent detention. The question now is what would you do if your teenage son was accused of murder? This is one of several questions at the heart of the new crime drama Adolescence. The gripping story unfolds in real time as the main characters from the central family to the detectives investigating the crime; search for answers in the wake of a shocking tragedy. Who is actually responsible for this crime? Why did it happen? Could it have been prevented?

I have found this TV drama “Adolescence” shocking and captivating. It has actually captivated audiences around the world. Audience all over the world are saying that it is a rare opportunity to tackle the largely hidden world of online misogyny and violence. Adolescence TV drama was released on Netflix on March 13 and since then more than 96 million people have watched the British four-episode series that begins with armed police raiding the home of a terrified 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a young girl, and ends with a raw illustration of the pain of his broken family. The action in between this Adolescence TV series, shockingly defies the initial disbelief that a child so young could commit such a violent crime! It depicts a toxic online culture known loosely as the manosphere in which common teenage male insecurities about attractiveness and romantic failure can turn into resentment and hatred of the opposite sex. Certainly, people are going to have different opinions. There are people who will watch it and think “but that boy cannot do that.”

This TV series Adolescence reached the home of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He watched it with his teenage son and daughter. According to Starmer, “It hit home hard.” Currently, Keir Starmer is promoting a scheme to make the TV series Adolescence available to schools across Britain and encouraging a national conversation on the issues it raises. Starmer says “this isn’t a challenge politicians can simply legislate for. Believe me, if I could pull a lever to solve it, I would.” For me I have always believed that such incidents or realities of Jamie Miller cannot happen in Nigeria. But I had to think again and realized that teenagers across the world have almost the same characters. But there is a DIFFERENCE.

The realities that play out in other countries does not happen in Africa/Nigeria. Keir Starmer has demonstrated with his actions that UK has responsible leaders and elites. The leaders who have empathy, compassion and the people at heart. How many Nigerian elites or politician are willing to watch a Nigerian movie and at the same time champion the cause of promoting the movie to raise awareness and put a solution to any menace that the movie is talking about? NONE! This is where the DIFFERENCE I am talking about comes in. Unfortunately, in Nigeria issues as that of Jamie Miller are been swept under the carpet. Even if it gets exposed, bribery and corruption will give the culprits the chance to get away with their crimes.

After a meeting with Keir Starmer in Downing Street, British writer Jack Thorne, revealed that Adolescence was to be rolled out forfree across all UK secondary schools as an educational material for students—not just in Britain but the entire United Kingdom. I ask again, how many Nigerian or Black elites and politicians can do what Keir Starmer have done? NONE! Keir Starmer have demonstrated to be a man of the people, a man with a heart of gold and a true leader! A virtue that CANNOT be found among Black elites and politicians.
